    The book starts with a prologue describing how and why Jack and Annie are able to travel in time, which makes the book accessible as a stand-alone. I understand the books are supposed to be quick, exciting reads for young readers, but for a series that is all about going to different places around the world and throughout time, we learn almost.   Good usage of mortar is to place it behing some obstacle (house, wall etc.) and fire to the enemy's infantry. It is good against machine gunners, guns, infantry in trenches or behind sandbags, or even against charging infantry. It is good to entrench or to move the mortar quickly and change its position to not to be spotted by enemy.
